A Focused Approach to Supporting Your Child’s Vision
At McGugan Eye Care, we understand the importance of your child’s vision in their overall growth and success. Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, can blur distant objects and potentially affect their long-term eye health. Myopia is caused by an elongated eye shape or steeply curved cornea, which may continue to change as your child grows.
Myopia control is designed to slow this elongation and prevent myopia from worsening. Our dedicated team will develop a personalized strategy for your child to support their eye health and vision. Schedule an eye exam for your child to get started.

Myopia typically starts during a child’s early school years and gets worse until they reach early adulthood. If at least one parent has the condition, your child is more likely to develop myopia. However, spending too much time indoors or too much close work can also lead to nearsightedness.
The whole point of myopia control is to use treatment methods that can slow down or even stop this progression.
Myopia in Children: How Vision Impacts Learning
Myopia is more than blurry vision. It can affect how your child interacts with the world, from potential clumsiness in sports to struggles with schoolwork.
Vision plays a significant role in developing visual skills and learning. If your child has trouble seeing, it can significantly affect their ability to learn from visual cues in social settings, track objects thrown during the big game, or follow along in the classroom.
With myopia control, we aim to provide personalized support to help preserve your child’s vision and eye health.
How Can We Help Slow Myopia Progression?
Standard eyeglasses and contact lenses can correct blurred vision, but they don’t stop myopia from getting worse. The goal of myopia control is to slow down eye growth and maintain current visual abilities.
When myopia levels increase, there’s a higher risk of serious eye conditions like glaucoma, early-onset cataracts, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. By managing myopia during childhood, we can help protect their eye health and vision.
Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is a form of orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k. It involves wearing a custom-designed rigid contact lens overnight to gently reshape the cornea, which helps improve how light focuses and slows down eye growth.
When your child wakes up in the morning, they can remove the CRT lenses and enjoy clearer vision all day without needing glasses or daytime contact lenses. Your child needs to wear the CRT lenses consistently to maintain the correction.
Multifocal contact lenses are soft, daily disposable lenses, so your kid can wear them once without worrying about a cleaning routine. The lens contains multiple focusing powers, which means it can help correct blurry vision and slow myopia progression at the same time.
Unlike standard lenses, Miyosmart eyeglass lenses are designed to correct blurry vision and slow myopia progression simultaneously. Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) technology uses a honeycomb lens pattern—multiple tiny lenses seamlessly integrated into the lens surface. The lenses are also durable and easy to wipe clean.
Atropine eye drops are used to dilate the pupils, traditionally a tool for evaluating eye health during comprehensive eye exams. When it comes to myopia control, we use low-dose atropine eye drops to help relax the eye’s focusing mechanism. Atropine has been proven to be an effective treatment for slowing myopia progression.
