Dr. Janet McGugan is a Strathroy-Caradoc local who attended both public and secondary school in Strathroy-Caradoc. She moved back to her family farm in the area, and it feels a little like her pre-1979 life.
She graduated with her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo in 1985. During her optometric career, she has served as a board member and committee chair of the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO). Janet won the OAO Young Optometrists Award in 1993 for contributions to her profession and has become a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Previously, she worked as a part-time clinical supervisor in the Contact Lens Clinic at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and has been an examiner of the Canadian board exams for optometry.
Janet has been a member of the Rotary Club of Strathroy since 1996. She served as president in 2000–01 and is a Paul Harris Fellow. Janet sat as chair of the Strathroy Chamber of Commerce from 1998 until 2021 and served on the board of directors.
Janet has served as a part of a Canadian eye care team since 1998 that travels to countries in need of eye care, offering their services free of charge. They perform eye examinations and distribute used eyeglasses. Janet has provided space for sorting and packaging close to 10,000 glasses donated yearly for use in developing countries.
When she’s not in the office, she enjoys knitting and doing yoga—but not at the same time because she’d rather treat eye injuries than have one herself.
